The Swim Wales Skills Academy is designed to increase both the quality and quantity of swimmers entering the Performance Pathway across the country. By providing a comprehensive development programme for swimmers, coaches, and parents, the academy creates opportunities to nurture talent and support progression during the transition from Development to Performance.
Our Vision
The primary goal of the Skills Academy is to provide swimmers aged 11–14 (11–15 for para-swimmers) with a holistic education and technical focus that will prepare them for success in the sport. This academy also serves as a platform for connecting Development and Performance clubs within local areas, facilitating the exchange of ideas, resources, and support.

Key Programme Components
We are excited to be delivering new components to Skills Academy for 2025/2026 season.
Based off feedback from the first year of Skills Academy, we will be demonstrating our commitment to delivering key components truly reflective of the needs of clubs across Wales.
For 2025/2026 season, Skills Academy key components include the following:
- Introduction to shoulder health and Pre-pool.
- Technical pool focus around Drill Progression framework for Butterfly and Freestyle.
- An introduction to basic nutrition for the young developing athlete.
- An opportunity to learn from elite athletes, ask questions and gain experience directly from some of our most successful Welsh swimmers.
How It Works
The Skills Academy will be delivered through a flexible, roadshow-style format across various counties in Wales. Each session will include:
- Team-building activities for swimmers.
- Technical focus pool sessions, covering starts, turns, and underwater techniques.
- Workshops introducing key educational topics such as Winning Behaviours and pathway education.

A Progressive Pathway
The Skills Academy is a long-term initiative that will evolve over the years to meet the changing needs of the athletes, coaches, and clubs. Each year, new components, such as lifestyle education, advanced drill progression frameworks, and targeted education, will be introduced to further develop the programme.
Launch and Future Plans
The skills Academy officially launched with a soft pilot as part of the Swim Wales National conference in 2024. In the first year of delivery, Skills Academy has engaged with over 400 people, from 40 clubs across Wales. As we look to the future, we aim to continue to grow the initiative to reach more Clubs, Coaches, Swimmers and Parents across Wales.

The age criteria is 11-14, when is this from?
Age of swimmers will be taken as of 31st December 2025. If you have para-swimmers that fit the criteria, please get in touch to discuss.

A full itinerary will be sent to clubs and coaches once confirmation of booking is complete across the County Hub.
How many times will Skills Academy be running in or area?
Skills Academy will be delivered once in each of the 6 locations every year. We will look to increase the frequency in the future.
I have more than 5 swimmers that are in the criteria I would like to attend, what do we do?
Spaces are limited to 5 swimmers per club, due to total capacity. If spaces become available by other clubs, clubs will be notified, and these will be re-released for booking.

Yes – Skills Academy is open to all swimming clubs across Wales!
How do we book a place?
All clubs across Wales will have recieved information and a booking link. Club coaches are asked to identify the swimmers they would like to attend using the Skills Academy criteria, and send the booking link to the swimmer. There will be a £20 fee per swimmer. Coaches will need to book a space also (free of charge). Parents will not need to book but are encouraged to attend alongside their child.

RESOURCES
Resources from the Skills Academy Activity Days will be available here after each event.
The below resources are available to aid all coaches across Wales in the delivery of technical programming within their home club environments.
Within this Resource Hub, Coaches can find Stroke Specific Drill Progression Frameworks for all four strokes, and the Dive Start Drill Progression Framework that has launched in 2025 through Skills Academy.
Accompanying each framework are land-based movements that support each drill progression. These resources aim to provide coaches and swimmers to develop an awareness during land-based work that can translate to the pool environment, leading to greater progressions for swimmers, a consistency of standards across Wales and the development pathway, and an understanding of how skill specific development can impact performance.
