On the 12th February, Service staff who have recently completed Swim Wales Swim Safety Instructor training delivered a dedicated water safety session for pupils from Ysgol Bod Alaw at Colwyn Leisure Centre. The session forms part of a wider collaborative project designed to enhance children’s knowledge, skills and confidence in and around water.

Swim Wales trained Fire and Rescue staff delivering water safety training in the pool.

Through the partnership, Fire and Rescue Service staff have been equipped with specialist training from Swim Wales to deliver engaging, practical water safety education sessions. By combining expertise from swimming development professionals and emergency service personnel, the initiative ensures that children receive consistent, high-quality guidance that could ultimately help save lives. Swimming is more than a sport, it is a fundamental life skill. This project reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that every child in Wales has access to meaningful water safety education, regardless of background or location.

Hanna Guise, National Learn to Swim Manager at Swim Wales, said:

“We are incredibly proud to work alongside North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Ffit Conwy on this important initiative. Learning to swim and understanding how to stay safe around water are essential life skills for every child. By training Service staff as Swim Safety Instructors, we are expanding the reach of vital water safety education and helping to build confidence and awareness from a young age. Swimming is more than a sport, it is a fundamental life skill. This project reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that every child in Wales has access to meaningful water safety education, regardless of background or location.

Following the success of the initial sessions, partners are planning to deliver further lessons in additional communities, with the long-term ambition of expanding the programme Wales-wide. Swim Wales remains committed to working collaboratively to ensure that swimming and water safety opportunities are accessible to all, helping more children gain the skills they need to enjoy water safely for life.
