New National Squads Support Fund from UK Sport

Swim Wales is delighted to see Water polo named in one of 8 sports included in a significant investment into national squads by UK Sport which will see up to £375,000 invested over the next 4 years into our sport.

The investment application process which was started by British Swimming and the Home Nations back in March last year has proved to be a very successful collaboration between the staff and volunteers of British Swimming, Swim England, Scottish Swimming and Swim Wales who make up the BWPLG (British Water polo Leadership Group).

This crucial contribution to Water polo will enable GB Squads to represent their country in a credible way on the international stage and develop a strong pathway for the future.

The investment into these eight sports brings the number of sports set to receive funding from the Government and The National Lottery to 51 with 36 on World Class Programme and seven on Progression. The breakdown of investment to the eight sports as part of the National Squads Support Fund is as follows, up to:

  • Artistic Swimming – £216,250
  • Goalball – £245,000
  • Handball – £375,000
  • Sitting Volleyball – £375,000
  • Softball – £288,750
  • Volleyball – £260,000
  • Water Polo - £375,000
  • Wrestling – £260,000

Fergus Feeney, CEO at Swim Wales and Chair of the British Water polo Leadership Group, said:

I am delighted for everyone involved in our sport today – our athletes, the leadership team and the community at large. I would like to thank Jack Buckner CEO at British Swimming, the Home Nations WP Chairs (Toby King, Tom Gebbie and Maxine McKinnell) and our dedicated development staff across the 4 NGB’s for all of your hard work.

This new fund to support National Squads and progression sports is a very welcomed addition to the UK Sport investment portfolio. Our investment award will help us support the unbelievable talent that we have in British Squads, as we take our new water polo strategy forward.

We are grateful to UK Sport for hearing our case for Water polo investment and making this decision. We are looking forward to working with them over the months & years ahead.”
