Welsh Wanderers Achieve British Success

The final weekend of the British League saw Welsh Wanderers Men  gaining promotion to division 1 after an absence of 2 years. The Wanderers appeared in the top flight of the league for 5 seasons from 2005 but were relegated when the league changed its format and reduced all divisions from 10 to 8 teams, in 2010.

The new format involves the 8 teams in division 2 playing each other once, with the top 5 then joining the bottom 3 from division 1 for a round robin known as Championship 1. The top 3 from the round robin then join the" super 5" top team from division 1, to form the 8 team first division for 2013.

The Wanderers finished second behind Sheffield at the half way stage  but really kicked on when they moved to the Championship 1 round robin, winning 6 of their 7 match. The final 3 matches were played at Loughborough University on 15/16 December and saw Wanderers beat Hucknall 17-4; Sheffield 6-5 and London Polytechnic 15-4. The match against Sheffield was particularly tense and defeat for  Sheffield meant that they unfortunately missed out on promotion, having been unbeaten for much of the season and despite playing some of the best polo in the league. Although Wanderers had the best goal difference, highest goals scored and lowest goals conceded, they missed out on the Championship 1 title, as they finished on equal points with West London Penguin, by virtue of Pengiun having won the match between the 2 teams.

Whilst the Wanderers played well across the squad at Loughborough, their 3 wins were based on the outstanding form of their 2 goalkeepers Sam Legge and James Farror, and Dan Laxton's 17 goals over the 3 matches. A special  mention also goes to 3 junior players, Chris James, Steffan Williams and Lewis Jones, who made their senior league debuts this year. Wanderers victory  against Polytecnic was though tinged with sadness, as it marked the final appearance of captain Charlie Hinder, before leaving the UK in January  to take up a medical post in Newcastle, Australia.

The league results also means that Wanderers will now be preparing  for the British Championships in February, a competition for the UK's top 8 teams.
