THREE Bridgend youngsters are making their mark in the tough sport
of water polo.
Alys Davies and Emily Smith have been selected to play for Wales
Under-17s in the Celtic Tri Nations Championships at Cardiff later
this month and Peter Mayne will be playing for the Under-17s boys
team against Ireland and Scotland.
Sixteen-year-old Alys lives at Barnes Avenue, Cefn Glas and attends
Bryntirion Comprehensive.
She has been playing water polo for about four years and enjoys the
physical and mental challenge that comes with playing a unique and
demanding sport.
It was a natural progression to develop her swimming after many
years with the Bridgend Swim Squad.
Emily, 14, lives in Kennedy Drive, Pencoed and goes to Pencoed
Comprehensive.
She started playing water polo in 2007 and has been in the Welsh
squad for two years, training every month with them.
She is also in the Great Britain squad and would like to thank Andy
Walker for getting her started.
Peter is a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd and lives at
Badger's Brook, Brackla.
He became interested in water polo after completing his swimming
badges and also credits Andy Walker for introducing him to the
sport.
Like Emily, he currently plays water polo for the Welsh Wanderers
in Cardiff where he is a goalkeeper.
Welsh Wanderers are the current Under-16 Welsh League
champions.
