Inter-Regional U18 Girls (Born 2001 & Under) Water Polo Championships 2018
A regional Welsh team travelled to Watford to compete in Division 2 of the above.
First up was Scotland. Wales (regional team) were 1-4 down at the end of the first quarter and went 6-5 ahead as we got to grips with the Scottish attacks. At the start of the last quarter Wales (regional team) were level at 6-6. In the last quarter Wales (regional team) twice went a goal behind but levelled on both occasions to draw 8-8 with the last goal scored with 45 seconds left to play.
Scorers: Nia Sanders 7 & Erin Jones 1
The second game on the Saturday was a tough battle with the North East. Although Wales (regional team) led 11-3 at half time The North East fought back with both sides scoring 8 goals in the second half of the game. The game was therefore won 19-11.
Scorers: Nia Sanders 12, Seren Vaughan 3, Lowri Skyrme 2 and Erin Jones 2.
At the end of the first day wales (regional team) sat second behind the West Midlands who had won both their games.
The match against the West Midlands was a great game full of counter attacking play, long shots and many errors. Again Wales (regional team) were 1-3 down at the end of the first quarter but levelled the score 5-5 at half time. Wales (regional team) led 7-6 at the end of the third quarter and scored first in the last quarter to lead 8-6 but the West Midlands could only pull one goal back to make the final score 8-7 to Wales (regional team). It was the best game of the competition.
Scorers: Nia Sanders 6 & Sophie Pearce 2.
The last match was against the North West Lightning which is the North West’s second team. This was the easier game of the weekend and it enabled me to give pool time to all players. The final score was 15-7.
Scorers: Nia Sanders 5, Emma Bailey 3, Anna Jenkins-Delf 2, Erin Jones 2, Breeanna Quine-Taylor 1, Rosie Griffiths 1 & Megan Jones 1.
The final table was:
1st Wales (regional team) 7 pts, 2nd West Midlands 6 pts, 3rd Scotland 5 pts, 4th North East 2 pts and 5th North West Lightning 0 pts
In addition to medals for the winning team promotion is gained to Division 1 for next year.
Nia Sanders was voted the Wales (regional team) MVP and was top goal scorer. Anna Jenkins-Delf was voted the Goalkeeper MVP.
