Two of Swansea's swimming elite will represent Team GB at this
Summer's London Olympics. Jemma Lowe and Georgia Davies both
qualified in their events at the recent Olympic Swimming Trials
staged at the newly built Aquatics Centre at the Olympic Park.
With an already impressive portfolio of success, the pair can
now focus all their energy on training for the Olympic Games. Lowe
qualified in the 200m Butterfly event and will be eager to surpass
her 4th, 6th and 9th places at the Beijing Games in 2008 whilst
Davies will be looking to build on her Bronze medal attained at
2010's Commonwealth Games.
The girls are 'shocked' and 'over the moon' about their
achievements and say training for the Games is a 'full time job'
which wouldn't be possible without the huge level of support they
receive from family and friends. Their weekly training regime
consists of 10 x 2 hour pool sessions, 2 to 3 gym sessions, morning
physiotherapy treatment to prevent injury and working with a
nutritionist to follow a strict dietary plan. They do however get
Sundays to themselves which they enjoy spending with friends,
shopping, trips to the cinema and beach BBQs in the summer. Growing
up Lowe's sister had a big influence on encouraging her to swim and
Davies says 'being able to swim has been an important life skill,
especially as we live so close to the sea'.
Jemma and Georgia join two other Welsh swimming hopefuls, Ieuan
Lloyd and David Davies of Cardiff, who also qualified for Team GB
in their events and with two more spaces up for grabs we keep our
fingers crossed for Swansea swimmer Jazz Carlin to stake her claim
beside them.
You can watch Jemma and Georgia compete at the Olympic Swimming
events which take place from 28th July to 4th August 2012.
