Swimming's a highly effective and safe form of
exercise.
The water supports up to 90% of your body weight so you're less
likely to have injuries while toning those muscles! And because the
water is much denser than air, you have to work harder than you
would on land, so you burn more calories in a pool. As well as
helping to keep your weight under control, regular swimming can
improve your mood, offer opportunities for socialising and reduce
the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2
diabetes and stroke. In short, live a healthier, happier, longer
life.
Swimming forms a component of many GP referral schemes, which
link together primary health care and leisure providers. GPs give
patients a 'prescription' to attend sessions at their local leisure
centre as a means to of treatment, helping them live with their
long-term condition or improving their general health.
- Encouraging people to get regular exercise is an important step
in tackling the increasing levels of obesity amongst every age
group in Wales. Not only is swimming ideal exercise but it's also
free for those aged 16 and under or 60 and over. Find out about free

- If you enjoy being in the pool, perhaps you should consider
joining a club to improve your technique and experience the thrill
of competitive swimming.
