Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise that you
can do at any time of your life, including while you're
pregnant.
The water supports up to 90% of your body weight so it can offer
relief from your increasing weight. You don't have to do endless
lengths; just being in the water can be great for your overall
well-being. Some women find it eases swelling in their legs and
feet and relieves sciatic pain.
You might not like the idea of getting into a costume as your
bump grows but you shouldn't let it put you off because swimming
can be so beneficial. And many swimming pools offer aquanatal
classes where you'll exercise only with other expectant
mothers.
You may wish to check with their doctor or midwife before going
swimming, particularly if it is a new activity for you. For most
women, swimming during pregnancy is safe but if you have a history
of miscarriage or difficulties during pregnancy, or suffer from
heart or lung disease, it is best to avoid swimming while you're
pregnant.
