Apply for classification

In order to be eligible to compete, a swimmer with a physical, visual, learning or hearing impairment must first be assessed to determine the degree of impairment. Complete application form to be placed onto waiting list for assessment.

Swimmers are classified into groups which will enable fair competition between swimmers with similar levels of dis/ability. There are two types of classification:

  • National (British Swimming) allows swimmers to compete at events in the UK only
  • International (International Paralympic Committee (IPC)) allows swimmers to compete in events around the world

Work as a classifier

Classification assessments are undertaken by two people - a medical classifier and a technical classifier. If you are a doctor or physiotherapist with an interest in swimming or a qualified swimming coach, you could become a classifier. Contact Swim Wales National Disability Manager Huw Griffiths for further information.
