Success in the region has been boosted by three well-established Performance Centres in Swansea, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire; London Olympics 2012 competitors Jemma Lowe and Georgia Davies live and train within the region. Swansea is home to the only Swimming ITC (Intensive Training Centre) in Wales, one of only five in the UK. The ITC offers the best possible facilities, services and expertise to consolidate our high performance base. With a wealth of highly qualified, talented coaches within each Performance Centre it is hoped that such success can be replicated in future Olympiads and Commonwealth Games.

Wales has held a strong tradition of producing high level Paralympic swimmers in the past and with British Swimming having one of their four High Performance Centres (HPC) at Wales National Pool, Swansea, the aim is to ensure that this tradition continues. Welsh competitors at London 2012 include Nyree Kindred, Liz Johnson and Rhiannon Henry.

Throughout the year there are a number of regional swimming competitions, for varying abilities.  These develop promising young swimmers by providing them with an understanding of competition structures and processes and giving them the opportunity to achieve qualifying times for other competitions.

The region is well served by swimming pool facilities, both public and private, while the coastal and lake swimming locations offer excellent opportunities for swimming in open water. The region now hosts the annual Swim Wales open water competition, The Dragon Open Water Swim, at Mumbles, Swansea. Other aquatic activities in the region include Diving at Llanelli and Water Polo in Carmarthen.
