Training for Open Water

ELITE 68

Swimming in the great outdoors requires you to take precautions which you wouldn't need to consider in a swimming pool.

  • It's best to swim with other people, and always leave details of your plans with someone before you set off.
  • Wear a bright hat so you're easily seen.
  • Don't swim near sailing/boating/ferry/jet ski areas.
  • If possible, have a kayak or support boat with you.
  • Get local advice on good places to swim, tides at sea, currents in rivers, water quality and access issues.
